For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith;
and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

This colorful wood comes from a fairly small tree in  Northeastern Brazil that doesn't grow fast and doesn't grow very straight.  The tree is a relatively small tree that averages 2" to 10" in diameter.

Most commercially available boards are 2" to 5". There is a usually a prominent heart defect (center of the tree) that prevents many clean boards over 4" in width. Actually, the average width usually is about 2.25".

It's official name is Dalbergia variabilis. It is also called bahia rosewood, bois de rose, pink wood and jacaranda rosa.

The sapwood is solid yellow.  The heartwood has a straw colored background with irregular stripes of yellow, rose, pink and violets.  The heartwood boards are generally no wider than 4  to 5 inches.  Most of the lumber is used for small or thin items such as inlays for veneer, pens or pool cue handles.

We purchase this wood, generally, only once a year.  The highest quality boards are available in the early spring.

This is one of the woods we use that doesn't feel like wood.  It is very hard and dense.  Polishes to a wonderful sheen.  The colors are vibrant.

The picture above is a representative example (the specific wood from these specific boards are no longer available) of three boards that are approximately 4" wide. The darker area in the center is the area where the "heart" defect is and is not usable for making a HoldingCrossTM and therefore waste. If we are able to pick a specific board, we can reduce the waste by picking a higher grade (read more expensive).

The example of the two HoldingCrossTM on this page give you an idea of the variety in this wood. No two HoldingCrosses are alike.

The picture of two HoldingCrosses is for illustration purposes only to show grain variance.  The HoldingCrossTM price is for each one.
