Honduran Mahogany is one of the woods that has been exploited for years.  We've not carried it before because we couldn't find a reputable source.

This wood has many names ...

  • South American Mahogany
  • Caoba (throughout Latin America)
  • Acajou (French-speaking areas)

Often named after the country it came from (i.e. Brazilian Mahogany, Peruvian Mahogany, Honduran Mahogany, etc.)

The species is secure in El Salvador and Honduras, but it has become endangered or extinct in some regions of South America. (Bolivia, Brazil (some regions), Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, & Panama.) Honduras mahogany trees once had a distribution covering most of South America. Supply of the wood is still plentiful thanks in part to plantation harvesting.

In North America, this mahogany is what most people think of or have seen.  It is the darkest of the three mahogany wood we carry.

We purchased this wood through one of our suppliers that bought the wood in an estate sale from a local widow that was cleaning out the workshop of her late husband.  This wood had been in his shop for over 40 years. She wanted it to go somewhere where it would be put to good use.

We bought the wood to make HoldingCrosses.
