Food for thought from HoldingCross

A Perfect Mother's Day gift.

Mother’s Day is always a day full of surprises at our house. I remember the surprise breakfasts in bed, flowers from the garden, homemade meals, handmade cards and poems, church family retreats, balloons, photos, songs, but most of all, gifts that were given with much love. I am so grateful that Jack diligently worked with and taught our boys how to love and respect woman. Each year he diligently worked with the boys to make my “Mother’s Day” very special. But, more importantly, he worked to make every day special to share with the boys how much he loved and cared for me.

All of our boys live out of state. As a matter of fact, they live on the East Coast and the West Coast. Coming to Texas to spend the day with me was not something we were planning for. After all, that would not be a trip someone would do “on a whim”. It would take careful planning. Additionally, it is not uncommon for us to be at a weekend show with HoldingCross. This was the case this year.

Sharing my cup of coffee with Jack on Mother’s Day Morning, he blessed me by telling me to come to the show later in the day. He encouraged me to take some time to relax and prepare for the day a little slower than usual. What a gift! Our calendar is normally quite full and does not lend itself to “slower’ and I was grateful but not prepared for the gift I was to receive.

Sitting down and being still brought TEARS. This is something I was not prepared for. I was not sad nor did I feel lonely. I was surprised and confused as to what I was feeling and could only inquire of the Lord what was going on. What came to mind was my boys and their families.

I love each of my boys. They are very different from one another in their gifts, talents and personalities. I always knew someday each would have “another woman” in their life to share with them “What outfit looked best” or how “they should do something” or “What do you think”. It had been my role for over 18 years and, for each of them, that fact is, I had been replaced. Only my youngest occasionally will call with a question such as this as he is still single.

The tears I was experiencing was not from losing my boys to another woman but from gaining daughters. Each of the women they have chosen has been a blessing to me … not because they are fun or beautiful or intelligent (which they all are) but because they love my boys for who they are and what they are. They support them as wives and love them as their lifelong spouses. Needless to say, I consider each of them a daughter.

My first daughter is a woman with a compassionate heart and a loving spirit. This is a family of the “his, hers and ours” variety. With grace, courage, love and laughter, this family adopted two little girls from a difficult situation and called them “their own”. The challenge of blending this family together is a testimony to the faithfulness of God and I can only marvel at the tenacity and strength of this incredible woman. She loves and gives and gives and gives.

My second daughter is a woman of undeniable support. This family has been faced with many health, work and financial challenges and yet she remains a rock of strength. She focuses on the needs of her family and hangs on tight. Her love is unfailing.

My third daughter is a woman of vision and quiet strength. She performs a delicate balance of supporting the needs of her husband and family and balancing the time she has to tend to her needs. She fills her house with joy and laughter and love.

My fourth daughter has yet to arrive. I know the Lord is still preparing the ground and hearts for this meeting. I pray for her arrival that it would be in God’s time with God’s love, tenderness and care. He knows the needs of this future family.

My Mother’s Day gift did not arrive in a beautiful gift box with a pretty bow. No, it did not come through the mail nor was it hand delivered. It arrived in my heart most unexpectedly. How beautiful a gift to receive to know the children I raised are being cared for in a loving and tender way. To know that my grandchildren’s needs are taken care of they feel loved. This is truly a wonderful gift and I am humbled and blessed to receive it.
